Chris Brasure here, talking about the top three causes of traumatic brain injuries.
The first is falls. The second is motor vehicle accidents, and the third is somebody being struck by or against an object. Now, let’s break that down just a little bit. Out of the 2.87 million Americans who suffered traumatic brain injuries, the Centers of Disease Control determined that these were the three leading causes.
We’ve had clients that suffered traumatic brain injuries from all of these causes. One client, for example, suffered a brain injury from electrical injuries. Other clients have suffered traumatic brain injuries from car crashes. Another client suffered a traumatic brain injury when she fell onto her head while trying to chase her son.
They did not realize the severity of the injury right away
The one thing they all had in common was that they did not realize immediately that they had a traumatic brain injury, and that the traumatic brain injury was going to be the longest-term problem for them. Now, fortunately, there is help and there is hope. With the proper treatment, many of our clients can improve their quality of life.
Causes: Falls
Now, let’s talk briefly about the leading causes, the first of which is falls. The CDC estimates that 48% of all traumatic brain injuries are caused by falls. Now, this danger is particularly important for children and the elderly because falls are the number one cause of traumatic brain injuries in children and elderly.
Motor vehicle accidents
The second leading cause is motor vehicle accidents. Now, this particular area is the leading cause for adolescents and adults. That means people between 18 and 55 years old.
Being struck by an object
And the last one is being struck by or against an object. And the CDC estimates that about 17% of the traumatic brain injuries are caused by being struck against or by an object. Now, this is really important for young people ages 5 to 17 because for those young men and women or kids, this is the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries.
What you should do
Here are the top three causes. And if you feel like somebody might have symptoms that are caused by one of these and they may have a traumatic brain injury, feel free to download any of the resources we have.
